Beginning in 1984, Canadian writers have achieved international visibility and success in the fields of science fiction and fantasy. This was owing to the publication of Guy Gavriel Kay's fantasy trilogy "The Fionavar Tapestry", Timothy Finlay's biblical flood fantasy "Not Wanted on the Voyage", William Gibson's "Necromancer" and Margaret Atwood's "A Handmaid's Tale" which appeared in 1985. This work surveys the history of Canadian science fiction and fantasy in English and French from 1839 to the present day. After discussing the factors that initially inhibited the writing of science fiction and fantasy in Canada and the qualities, themes and imagistic biases that distinguished Canadian science fiction and fantasy, it identifies a canon of books that deserve to be singled out on the basis of historical interest, literary merit or both.
