Electromagnetic wave propagation underlies many modern photonic applications and devices. This text presents a modern overview of the propagation of light in present day optical media, including important and recent applications based on wave propagation in optical materials. The authors focus on the physics of wave propagation (propagation of electromagnetic waves in several types of optical media, including dielectrics, metals, semiconductors, anisotropic crystals, periodic media, nonlinear optical materials, liquid crystals, and metamaterials) and the modification of materials due to the interaction with external perturbations such as elastic, electric or sound waves. The aim of this textbook is to provide the reader with a clear physical picture of the propagation properties of (laser) radiation in various optical media and structures, and the basic skills to design and analyze widely-used photonic devices. Additional reading and exercises are provided at the end of every chapter.
